Prescribing Safety

MEDICATION SAFETY OFFICER

Unique combination
In the VU University Medical Center, Marianne Kuijvenhoven (hospital pharmacist) and David Brinkman (medical doctor) work together as medication safety officer (MSO; Picture 1). Their job is to enhance medication safety in the hospital. Their focus lies on all aspects of the medication-use system, including procurement, prescribing,transcribing, preparation, distribution, administration, documentation, and monitoring. The combination of a pharmacist and doctor is unqiue. We believe that this combination is crucial since expertise from the pharmacy and clinical practice are needed to enhance medication safety and prevent patient harm.

Some of the MSO projects in the VU University Medical Center:

  • Developing a network of nurses and medical doctors with special interest in medication safety;
  • Developing and conducting medication safety rounds for hospital wards;
  • Educating new professional staff on the culture of medication safety.
